General Questions

The approach to setting up a web page is sort of like being a detective. You must answer those general questions of Why, What, How, and Where.

Why Host a Website?

Before I go into explaining all the other details involved in web design you may be asking yourself Why you would even want a web site. Well, the Internet and World Wide Web is the fastest growing communication device know to us at this time. The information located on the Internet is accessible to everyone all over the world if they have access to the proper equipment. At one time information traveled slowly through mail, phone, papers, media, printed material and word of mouth. At the touch of a button the world is now at your finger tips.

Businesses can run their own intranets(for their company employees only) or internets for everyone. Post new company data, highlights, company functions, safety issues, monthly news letter or any information that affects your business, employees, or your clients.

Retail Businesses can offer clients 24 hours X 7 days a week access to their products and companies. Clubs and organizations can inform members of current events, membership information, sign ups, volunteer schedules, ticket sales, and other club details without having to phone and e-mail all members. It is a chance to communicate and obtain new members for the organizations.

Families can exchange wedding pictures, baby pictures, information on family events and other important information to the ones they care about, any time, by creating a family site and hosting them on a server. The Internet is also one of the cheapest ways to advertise your business. Companies can advertise new products, business hours, specials, newsletters, and other new and exciting ideas and items that are happening in their busness.

E-commerce sites are also one of the hottest types of sites that are now offered to business. Why not sell your merchandise to the general public by using the computer and sales by charge cards!

Web Pages are the way of the present and the future in communications and business. Technology will only increase and the World Wide Web will only continue to get bigger and stronger.

So now that you have decided to do a web page now the real questions start to surface.

What population are you trying to reach?

What population or target market you are trying to reach on the Internet will affect the way you design your site. If this was a business selling retail items, your target population would be those individuals interested in your products.

You must make sure you are communicating to this group with a theme that will interest these clients. You also want to reflect your professionalism so you must also plan on how to portray your image. If you are selling children products then you would have a fun and brightly colored site.

Each web page is designed carefully for the target audience and thought out to meet the needs of the client and of the company.

How do you start to put together the site?

This is a very critical part of the design and planning process. This part of the web process takes time, but if done correctly will save many hours of corrections later on in the final stages of the web page. The client must ask many questions on how they would like the site to look and therefore decide on many details such as:

how many key pages are needed
how many different links are needed if any
what type of logo for your company, if one is not already available
what color theme for
the site
is animation or flash required, and if so is loading time worth the graphics
how much initial investment (your budget)will be put into the web page(s)
is digital photography required
is the site using E-commerce

is a database needed
are their forms to be filled by the user
are there any links involved
is e-mail to be used
how often is the site to be updated, and who will update the site
where is the site to be hosted
do you need an address, or URL address eg. www.yourdomainname.com
is an entrance page needed
do you need english and another language to click into
any special coding needed such as calculators, or specialty forms with numbers
what is the time frame you need the site by

These suggestions are just a start to get the client thinking about how the design and look of their web site. For a more detailed description click into Web Designs

Where do I host the site?

Once the web site has been designed the next logical question is where do we put it. Remember that once the site is designed, hosting your site on a server will also require a cost to you. A server can be described as the storage space for your web site. When someone on the Internet goes to the address of your web site (also referred to as URL) the Internet will take them to the server where your site is being hosted or stored.

So now the question arises as to where these servers are. Servers are located all around the world. Some major companies have their own servers. Even individuals or offices sometimes have their own servers. The normal everyday Internet user usually does not have a server at home. It takes qualified people and software to watch over these servers to provide 24 hour service to users and clients. Some type of security needs to be supplied to the valued information stored. So this now brings us to the important question....where do we find a server? There are many companies out there that offer hosting. Each company offers different prices and amounts of space to store your information. You must also register your domain name which will require another additional cost but will be a one time cost usually for two years. Make sure that when you are checking out servers that you are getting a qualified and reliable company. Authentic Web Designs can take care of all your needs when it comes to a server and registration of your domain name.
